Mayan incense copal is the inspiration for COPAL AZUR, created in 2014 by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, who is also the author of AEDES DE VENUSTAS' first scent, SIGNATURE. Incense is a scented thread found in much of the AEDES DE VENUSTAS collection. This millenary-old burnt offering to the gods is at the origin of the art of perfumery, as the word "perfume" comes from the Latin word per fumare, meaning "through smoke". Who better than Duchaufour to throw incense from the church into the forest by the sea? Strikingly similar to frankincense, whose Nahuatl name means “incense,” copal can be obtained from a variety of trees native to Central and South America. And like frankincense in Ancient Egypt or Greece, it was burned by the Mayans and Aztecs to "feed" the gods. It is still used for spiritual purposes in Mexico today. Since copal resin cannot be used as a perfume ingredient, three different extractions of frankincense are used, from top notes to base notes, making up an exaggerated 30% of the formula.
