The contemporary baroque interpretation of geranium highlights the raw elegance of the precious olfactory substance. A still life strikingly elegant in its scent, PELARGONIUM depicts the eponymous material as if it were one of the mysterious floral compositions of Dutch Golden Age paintings. “My aesthetic inspiration was the old-school flower that everyone thinks they know, but no one actually knows,” says perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer, who draws geranium from deep within the olfactory pyramid to showcase its complexities using freshly crushed petals, shedding light on dark woods and resins. But this 2017 work isn't your garden's red geranium. Pelargonium graveolens, whose name means "sweet-scented", produces one of the most versatile essences in perfumery. Distilled from the plant's leaves rather than its flowers, this geranium has long been used as a fresh pink note, hence its local name "rose geranium". Here, Feisthauer says, the geranium is less fruity and more balsamic, almost incense-like, and acts as the central motif of this intriguing composition. The perfumer begins by stretching a canvas of cool orris notes over a smooth cedar frame. He then paints a dark, smoky background of Haitian vetiver, guaiac wood and moss. The golden light of Calabrian bergamot, accented with flashes of green cardamom, pervades the scene captured by richly textured components that add volume and contrast to the composition. The herbal sweetness of the carrot enhances the orris accord; The amber color of clary sage evokes the softness of velvety leaves. The lemony, peppery, incense-like elemi resin is enhanced by the musk haze softening its edges.
