A tribute to the ancient African Blackwood and its stately home. From crunchy sap to balmy resin. From smoky wood to sun-baked stone. From purple twilight to inky black night. GRENADILLE D'AFRIQUE refers not only to the tree that bears its name, but also to the primitive landscape in which it grows. "This is an amazing, uncompromising and sensual scent," explains perfumer Alberto Morillas. "The ingredients are simple, plain and unadorned. It is thanks to this intensity and simplicity that the scent turns into art." It all starts with the African Blackwood tree, a rare, expensive member of the rosewood family whose Latin name Dalbergia melanoxylon means "black tree." The title contrasts with the variety of wood, also known as grenadilla, which moves from deep purple to brownish black. Ancient Egyptians, who called it h'bny, made valuable furniture from its heartwood. The Makonde people in Tanzania, who know it as mpingo, use it to create magnificent, highly prized Tree of Life carvings. In 2016's GRENADILLE D'AFRIQUE, Alberto Morillas transforms it into a remarkably elegant scent sculpture. It is built around a "trunk" of the legendary African Elm, the Haitian vetiver, whose aromatic, juniper-scented sap extends from its branches to its roots. It is the vertical axis that brings together the herbal, animal and mineral notes of the scent with its complex aspects consisting of wood, smoke, earth and flint. It's hard to tell at first breath whether the perfume takes you into sunset or dawn. Shimmering bergamot catches the last rays of the sun, while a mist of purple lavender and violet scatters powdery moonlight across the savannah grasslands. Later in life, transformed into flammable resin by a blow of the amber cistus labdanum, vanilla exudes a balsamic warmth. Bleached wood, skin-soft bark and sun-warmed stone release the warmth of the day into the inky black night cooled by the musk breeze.
