It was commissioned to celebrate the reinvention of AEDES PERFUMERY and its move to 16A Orchard Street on New York City's "Lower" Lower East Side, a vibrant district of galleries, skate shops, cafes and small, exclusive shops attracting a modern and diverse crowd. crackling energy and excitement. In 2021, it took on a deeper meaning for AEDES DE VENUSTAS founders Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl. “Every soul has experienced a major change in their life,” says Gerstner. "During this time, we put down roots. Here, in this neighborhood that represents the turnover of New York City, we unknowingly did something much more important." Not just the smell, the feel. Something that feeds and then grows. “I aimed to create a sense of emotional well-being through a simple scent structure,” says perfumer Frank Voelkl. “The use of ingredients derived from natural roots, such as ginger and orris, connects us to the earth and makes us feel grounded and centred.” But instead of recognizing a single note or scent category, 16A ORCHARD is presented in a somewhat mysterious manner. "You don't know right away what to do, and that's what makes it interesting," says Gerstner. "You can't put your finger on that. That's the essence of the Lower East Side. It teaches you to think—and live—outside the box." Earthly materials become airy in Voelkl's hands. Ginger raises questions, throws you off track. Iris brings out cold yet sensitive qualities, bringing you back into focus. Quince and lily of the valley strengthen the roots. Dry cedarwood and cashmere-like tonka create a spicy, dry roundness to more transient notes of bergamot, lemon, cardamom and jasmine. AEDES DE VENUSTAS 16A ORCHARD is presented in a precious container: a fluted glass bottle marked with peacock blue accents, the cap stamped with matte black emblems and a stylish but heavy design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story.
