Something that feeds and then grows. “I aimed to create a sense of emotional well-being through a simple scent structure,” says perfumer Frank Voelkl. “The use of ingredients derived from natural roots, such as ginger and orris, connects us to the earth and makes us feel grounded and centred.” But instead of recognizing a single note or scent category, 16A ORCHARD is presented in a somewhat mysterious manner. "You don't know right away what to do, and that's what makes it interesting," says Gerstner. "You can't put your finger on that. That's the essence of the Lower East Side. It teaches you to think—and live—outside the box." Earthly materials become airy in Voelkl's hands. Ginger raises questions, throws you off track. Iris brings out cold yet sensitive qualities, bringing you back into focus. Quince and lily of the valley strengthen the roots. Dry cedarwood and cashmere-like tonka create a spicy, dry roundness to more transient notes of bergamot, lemon, cardamom and jasmine.
